Ian Smith's tribute to Brendan Farrell

At the auction held in 2009 at KMFC to dispose of Brendan Farrell's aeromodelling estate, Ian Smith was an active bidder and purchaser.

Ian's intention was to restore Brendan's models where they were partially or completely built, and to build the Strega from the almost-ready-to-cover (ARC) kit purchased at the auction.

The following is Ian's tribute to a much-missed KMFC member.

MERCURY MAGNETTE. Circa 1948, designed by Henry J Nichols and Ron Moulton of Aeromodeller magazine fame.

MERCURY MAGNETTE. The Magnette was one of the first (if not the first) C/L trainer kits in the UK. This model is powered by an E.D. competition special from Brendan's estate.

Kiel Kraft Skystreak. Circa 1950. Dennis Percival built this model who (after winning, a REMAC vintage competition in the 1980's with it) passed it on to Brendan.

Kiel Kraft Skystreak. Ian retrieved this model from Brendan's estate and gave it back to Dennis to restore who, after restoration, returned it to Ian. The engine in this plane is also from Brendan's estate..

Brodak Strega. The Strega is an A.R.C. kit that Brendan never completed. It was new-in-box when Ian purchased it.

Brodak Strega. Windy Urtnowski designed the Strega and Brodak sold the kit.

Brodak Strega. Its vital statistics are: 60" span, 742 sq ins, 76 ounces. It's a big plane

Brodak Strega. The Strega is powered by a Saito 62 4-stroke.

Brodak Strega. Ian reports that the Strega is a smooth and well-grooved flying machine.

Cardinal. The Cardinal is also a Windy Urtnowski design. This model is powered by an LA 46.

Cardinal. Ian constructed this from an ARC fuselage and kit ribs. The landing gear and pants are from a crashed ARF of Brendan's. The remainder was scratch-built.

    Frog Aerobat. Circa mid-1950's.

Frog Aerobat. This plane is powered by a Frog 2.49 special purchased from Brendan's estate.
